Bridge of the gods Boulders

Located in the heart of the Columbia Gorge, the Bridge of the Gods Boulders provides another packed cluster of unique andesite boulders worth a visit.

Information

After Carver Boulders was being well tapped, the locals way-back-in-the-day, expanded their search for more stones, and B.O.G.B. was put on their hit list for tapping.

Its convenient locale (along a main highway corridor), and its near year-round viability provided an additional venue for enjoying outdoor bouldering here in the NW USA.

The site is an extensive series of talus fields (wrapped by a thicket of brush and forest), most yield well broken talus, while in a few rare spots, it yields sizable stones from 8'-13' diameter (and rarely up to 18' tall).

The talus originated from Table Mtn to the north, and sloughed off into the Columbia River long ago.

Of the two popular zones, the lower power lines area, and the 'upper dome or knoll area' provide the main entertainment.

Recommendations

  • It is recommended that you bring 1-2 crash pads for most of the common problems.

  • Cell phone reception is good.

  • Expect lots of poison oak in the spring and summer months so fall and winter is best for avoiding the itch.

  • Best in winter months, though the site is viable the entire year (if you can deal with the poison oak). The Gorge experiences considerable breezes all year, so even during the wet winter months with strong prevailing wind patterns the site can dry out fairly quickly in a matter of 1-2 days. The site has a south facing aspect.

  • Conveniently located just off from a main highway corridor, on gravel roads convenient for most vehicle access.
